The Harley Gray Clinical Services Building forms the new core of Middlemore Hospital by linking all the existing inpatient facilities.
It includes a 14 Theatre Operating Unit and 43 bed Recovery Suite. In addition an 18 bed High Dependency Unit and a 42 bed Assessment and Planning Unit. It also incorporates shell space for future Radiology and Laboratories for which concept design has been completed.
Non-clinical support functions include Patient Information, Loading Docks, Inwards Goods and Hospital Kitchen (in conjunction with specialist kitchen designer). To service this large footprint building a strong axial system of corridors and vertical circulation was developed, creating zones that provide separation of staff and patients with public.
A major design driver for the exterior was the requirement to allow for the future fit out of Labs and Radiology below the Theatre and plant floors while maintaining the functionality of the existing theatre facility.
Initial design was in association with Silver Thomas Hanley & Chow Hill Architects.
The project received a Special Purpose Property Excellence Award in the Property Council New Zealand, Rider Levett Bucknall Property Industry Awards 2014.
