We have significant experience in this field including recent involvement on many of New Zealand’s major current healthcare projects.
Our work in this field includes public hospitals, and aged care hospitals. We have ongoing relationships with many of the district health boards, providing professional services including masterplanning, health planning and concept design through to full design and contract observation. Our substantial and continually expanding healthcare library includes both New Zealand and international guidelines and we have a programme for ongoing benchmarking of facilities.

• Auckland City Hospital - 2003
  A new 710-bed hospital that integrates all specialist healthcare services on one site. Klein assisted the contractor, Fletcher Construction, with the production of architectural shop drawings for approximately 70% of the building fitout and conducted prototypes for the operating rooms and ICU spaces. • Auckland Hospital Angiography - 2007-2008
  Internal refurbishment and upgrade of Auckland City Hospital angiography room, scrub and prep areas. Close
• Breast Screening Clinic - 2005
  Internal alterations to provide mammography rooms, consulting space and reading rooms for the Northern Region Breast Screening Aotearoa. Close
• Buchanan Clinic - 1992
  Conversion of existing acute inpatient facility to provide 10 inpatient beds and additional support services. Close
• Burwood Hospital Stage2 - 2004 - 2006
  Provision of specialist healthcare design and fitout documentation for a new operating suite with four operating rooms, new 30-bed orthopaedic surgical ward and special care unit. Close
• Carrington Hospital Mental Health Transitional Units - 1992
  Relocation and conversion of existing buildings into rehabilitation facilities. Close
• Christchurch Hospital Endoscopy Suite - 2003
  Refurbishment to provide four new endoscopic suites, examination rooms, pre-op, recovery and associated support areas. Close
• Eden Clinic - 1991
  Conversion of existing offices to provide a drug and alcoholic rehabilitation clinic. Close
• Kenepura, Wellington Hospital - 2001
  Development of additional floor area and refurbishment of existing building stock to upgrade and expand the capability of the hospital. Klein provided a design team management role. Close
• Manukau Elective Surgical Hospital (MESH) - 2000 - 2001
  This new 80-bed, elective surgery hospital was designed as an extension to the existing Manukau Superclinic. Klein designed and documented the fitout of the Ground Floor Surgical Suite. Close
• Manukau Hospital Superclinic Extension - 2006 - 2009
  An extension to the existing Superclinic building at Manukau including a new opthalmology outpatient module, a new womens health outpatient module and a new dialysis unit. Close
• Middlemore Hospital Adult Medical Centre (AMC) - 2000 - 2006
  A new four level (ultimately six level) inpatient building.  Stage one and two included: 4 x 30 bed medical wards, 20 bed renal ward, 20 space renal in-centre, and future cathlab shell.  The design principle for this building was a pod concept, with central core support area, from which two wards project at right angles. • Middlemore Hospital Burns Centre - 2002
  This 12-bed burns facility was designed to occupy the 3rd floor of the existing Galbraith building. The unit was to be designated the National Burns Centre for the treatment of people with severe burn injuries. Close
• Middlemore Hospital Catherisation Labs - 2003
  Development of design, co-ordination and design documentation for Catherization Lab, including documentation for the equipment installation. Close
• Middlemore Hospital Imaging Ultrasound - 1999
  Upgrade of the existing ultrasound suite to provide private treatment rooms and new administration offices. Close
• Middlemore Hospital Maternity & Paediatrics - 2000
  Development of interior colour schemes and finishes. Close

  Upgrade of the existing Mortuary facility on the Middlemore South Auckland campus. Close
• Middlemore Hospital Neo-Natal Intensive Care - 2002
  A 30-cot facility for the care of premature babies, this was designed to maximize family involvement in the care of the infants, while minimising the visual impact of the high level of servicing needed. Close

  New 500-bed base isolated hospital facility providing all specialties. Klein provided a design team management role. Close

  Concept design for a new community hospital, which will provide a full range of hospital and clinical services. Close

  Upgrade of existing Coronary Care Unit, Cardiac Test and Cardiology Ward staff areas. Modifications included improved write-up area and natural light to bed spaces. Close

  Klein was invited to be on the expert committee developing the New Zealand Standard for Residential Dementia Services. This led to an invitation to write the appendix for this standard on "Specialised Design of the Residential Environment for Dementia Care". Close
