The works intended to not only increase the capacity of the existing hospital buildings but also upgrade the trajectory of procedures, skills, and quality of care within the patient-centric environment. The flow and connection to the existing buildings on site have been carefully considered to gain smooth function across the patient journey from admission to discharge. Modern, patient-focused schemes in conjunction with cutting edge equipment and technology, holistically aid the care and treatment of patients occupying the space.

The development of the extensive building footprint includes:

  • 10 Operating Theatres
  • 24 Ward Bedrooms (28 patient beds)
  • 6 ICU Bed Bays
  • 6 HDU Bed Bays
  • 17 PACU Bed Bays
  • 280m2 Sterile Store

Detailed workshops and room mock-ups with the client and users allowed initial design solutions to be refined at a 1:1 scale, ultimately ensuring that the design outcome would meet and exceed the quality of care for users. The mock-up methodology provides staff an opportunity to visualise and understand the spaces they will be working in and communicate any concerns to ensure comfort and hauora can be achieved within the working environment.

A variety of staff spaces, hubs and change rooms, including a main staff room, terrace and courtyards, removed from the pressures of the ward and theatres, allows the concept of care and respite to begin with the staff. The care and comfort that these spaces offer staff, have the greatest ability for these attributes to reflect in the staffs passion for helping and treating patients in harmony with the building.
