The construction of Counties Manukau Catheter Renal Dialysis Expansion was completed in October 2022. This expansion provides a brand new Catheterisation Laboratory within the existing unit.
A substantial amount of planning was required to meet both the clinical requirements for pre, during and post procedure care. This included consideration to flows for both patients, whanau, staff and goods (clinical and non-clinical), while meeting AusHFG guidelines, infection control requirements and specifics for equipment coordination. The project teams carefully planned to minimise disruption to an already stretched highly critical zone of the hospital, housing many of the most vulnerable patients and highly technical equipment.
While the project brief was highly clinical, the choice of warm and natural surface finishes and intelligent lighting design elevated this unit from the usual sterile procedural environment to something special.
The new expansion aligns with the Northern Region CCL service plan to ease pressures on facilities. ‘I feel [we] have delivered a great outcome for the patients, staff, Middlemore and the overall South Auckland community.’ Daud Suryantyo, Project Manager at Counties Manukau, said about the project after the first interventional procedure in the new Cath Lab 2 took place.
