This project contains a new theatre suite, Emergency Department and an MAPU (Medical Assessment and Planning Unit) in a 6600m2 new building and a 3000m2 refurbishment of the existing Hutt Hospital.
The new theatre suite includes 8 operating theatres, day surgery, a pre and post-operative support facility including administration and staff facilities, and a new central sterile supplies department. The new Emergency Department accommodates satellite imaging, acute and sub-acute zones, resuscitation and ambulatory care, while the MAPU streamlines patient assessment and reduces the demand of unnecessary admissions on the wards. The MAPU is a new department for Hutt Hospital. A new ICU with a strong emphasis on infection control and isolation rooms and a new endoscopy suite and numerous other departments (orderlies, mortuary etc.) were also included in the development.
The building is base isolated to service a 1 in 2500 year earthquake, and would be used as a civil defence centre in the event of a major disaster in Wellington. The project took a strong environmentally sustainable design initiative and performed well under the Greenstar Healthcare Pilot.
Extensive remodelling of the site provides new ambulance drop off zones, but also include new on-grade carparks and carpark building, barrier controls and site signage.
Klein undertook the roles of project manager, lead consultant, project architect, health planners and were engineers to the contract.
