E Tū Wairua Hinengaro at Mason Clinic is a 60‑bed, state‑of‑the‑art forensic mental health facility in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. Its opening marks a significant milestone for mental health infrastructure in Aotearoa and sets a new benchmark for therapeutic environments nationwide.

Formally opened on 30 January 2026, the facility has now been welcomed by clinicians, project partners, and the community, a moment that reflects 15 years of collaboration, care, and shared commitment to better outcomes for tāngata whaiora, their whānau, and the staff who support them. Replacing four ageing units that were no longer fit for purpose, the new building brings together shared public entry, communal spaces, and back‑of‑house functions, forming the first stage of a long‑term campus masterplan designed to meet future demand.

This project is especially significant as the first purpose‑built, state‑of‑the‑art forensic mental health facility, including a high‑security ward, constructed in Aotearoa since 1999. Its architecture prioritises dignity, connection to nature, clarity of movement, and a calm therapeutic environment, principles that sit at the heart of Klein’s approach to healthcare design.

Cultural design integration has been facilitated by Oliver Haddon through the mana whenua engagement process, while the mahi toi throughout the unit has been produced by artist Mei Hill and developed into architectural elements alongside the Klein team.
