Key design principles for this building include the ability to flex beds between wards, a regular grid and open plan floor plate free of vertical risers to allow maximum flexibility for future use. The design has accommodated significant change in the site masterplan. Careful consideration was given to ensure the flexibility and robustness of the building to accommodate changing requirements over time. The generic ward design, flat facade and clear floor plates have allowed adaption for a range of outpatient and procedural clinical functions.
The building, although designed originally with clinical support anticipated to the north now accommodates connections to the clinical services building to the south.
