The Harley Gray building includes a 14-theatre Operating Unit and 43-bed Recovery Suite. In addition an 18 bed High Dependency Unit and a 42-bed Assessment and Planning Unit. It also incorporated shell space for future Radiology and Laboratory developments.

Non-clinical support functions include patient information, spiritual centre, loading docks, inwards goods and hospital kitchen. To service this large footprint building a strong axial system of corridors and vertical circulation was developed, creating zones that provide separation of staff and patients from the public.

A major design driver for the exterior was the requirement to allow for the future fit-out of Radiology and the Laboratory below the theatre and plant floors while maintaining the functionality of the existing theatre facility.
